I'm very busy at the moment developing an alternative furnace burner.

As everyone is aware, oil has reached all time highs and shows no signs of coming back down. If anything it'll likely continue to rise. I can't just sit back and let this be ignored. Too many people are hopelessly at the mercy of these increases. Across the northern tier of The US, where I live, too many homes are for sale that will end up not being sold due to the cost of heating them. Elderly and other fixed income families are being forced from their homes not only because they can't heat them but also because their taxes are rising to cover the costs of government services that can also be linked to higher oil costs.

A home heating system that frees people of oil dependence may lack the sex appeal of a 100mi./gal. car that goes 0-60 in less than 5 sec. but, it attacks the underbelly the beast. While some 70% of our oil use goes to transportation, I'm noticing that, in my semi-rural community, heating is a much larger problem. Most people here already conserve to a greater or lesser extent on their transport needs. Few major things are close by and traveling every day to farther communities on errands is a hassle that can be avoided by consolidation of errands. But, in an area where winter temps are frequently well below zero both day and night, there's only just so cool you can safely set your thermostat. Under such conditions, too low a heat setting can lead to freezing of plumbing and other costly problems.

So, I ask your pardon if I'm not as frequent in my updates here as I should. I assure you all that the cause is worthwhile and truly for the benefit of us all.

New Links

Just added a couple of new links that have free to browse content. You know the ones; Get paid for your opinion or win a chance at these prizes just share your opinion.

What really drives me to the mat about these annoying interruptions is that you share your opinion but it's only valid if you agree to participate in one program or another that eats away nearly every dime that you may or not gain from "simply sharing your opinion." Then, on top of that there's the simple fact that you're giving out your opinion but, no one's listening. I took a shot at a few of these for research purposes and immediately found that they're mostly a waste of time.

For instance, you're asked about your marital status, age, interests, own or rent your home, type of home, etc. Now I, personally, answer honestly; married, 49, motorcycling (when that shows up on the prewritten list), own, single family, etc. I have no interest at the moment in refinancing, buying insurance, grey hair's cool by me, and the fact that it falls out simply doesn't matter, ad nauseum. I get to the end of the survey only now to find that I must participate in any TWO of their sponsors offers to "qualify." So, since I really object to hidden requirements, I instantly bail out. Home free, right? Not so fast there bucko, your email address is now fair game to their sponsors. And since I've answered honestly and they're so truly interested in my opinion, my email in-box instantly begins to fill up with offers to get in touch with singles in my area, refinancing deals, sell my home deals, offers to subscribe to a quilters' newsgroup, hair restorer, and .....well you get the idea.

Honestly, this is the internet equivalent of, "should I wear the green dress or the pant suit?" You're doomed, you pick the pantsuit and the green dress gets the nod. (No, that's not a cheap shot, I'm sure that some men play similar option games, I just relate it in the fashion familiar to me.)

Unless something changes radically, the advice of this correspondent is shun the surveys and find something that offers you some control.

Check Out Your Opportunities Carefully

Don't just go signing up for those offers you get via email!

If you've heard of the company and the return address contains the company's name or something quite like it, that's one thing. But, there are too many scammers out there eager to get their hands on your personal information. We've all seen the so-called Nigerian scam where you're told you will receive a large sum of money and all you need to do is send a one time fee in order to get the funds released. Well, that was child's play. Those folks were only interested in your money.

The new rage is a wave of email notices either informing you of a lottery win or presenting a job opportunity. Both of these ask for all of your particulars to verify who you are then, before you know it your identity is gone being carried off in their slick pockets.

A recurring theme here is that you don't get something for nothing and when you get an email from a lottery you've never heard of or job for which you never applied, an alarm bell should sound loudly.

Believe me, I know what it's like when you're down and out. Some of these things come popping into your life and deposit hope. The temptation is to sign right on up because you have so much need. All I'm saying is that you need to watch what you do first. Have you even heard of the company? Did you post a resume somewhere that they may have viewed it? How is it that the Australian Lottery has a UK or Netherlands return address?

I throw in that last one because I recently received a real live paper snail mail from the UK wherein there was a letter headed by an official looking banner with Australian flags, Australian Lottery in big bold letters, and a bunch of hopping kangaroos. Well kids, I've never bought a ticket for the Australian Lottery, it never occurred to me. A not-overly-close look told me that all the fancy printing was done on an ink jet rather than being professionally printed corporate stationery. And the biggest alarm bell of all, it said it was tax-free. If you've ever gotten as close to the IRS as I have then you'd know right off that no matter where a lottery was won the local government is going to want a sizable chunk before the ink's dry on the winner's notice.

Don't let desperation be your guide. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. That's not to say you shouldn't take a moment to look it over before you discard it. After all, couldn't we all use a little unexpected good fortune? With letters like I mention above I check out the Secret Service scams database. Or try to look up the company involved. It's not that I expected to really have won anything like that but hey, a spare $3.7 million US wouldn't be resented in my house!

Reasons 2

Are you okay with the way the world works? Satisfied with your job and life-style? Then you may not see a reason to set up a home-based business.

But, suppose you are happy with business as usual but find yourself unable to participate? Maybe you've sustained an injury or even developed an allergy to something in your workplace environment. You want to work but just can't do what you used to do. This is where I found myself. While I wasn't completely satisfied with the status quo, I was sufficiently happy keep me from investing on just any old program that came down the pike. Then it happened. As a manager it fell to me to see to it that all shifts were covered and that the operation never closed. Occasionally this meant filling in myself in addition to my regular duties. One night my third shift called out and there was no one willing to fill in leaving just me. I filled the position, kept the store open and injured my back in the process. The injury is to some degree permanent and so all the jobs that I used to do are now impossible for me. Now what? I'd risen through the ranks based on learning while doing. Most of the management positions I'm readily qualified for require some degree of hands on participation in the operation. Nobody seems interested in hiring someone who needs a cane and has to change positions frequently to ease pain their back.

That leaves building a position of my own. My own business. What to do and how to do it? I've spent the much of the time qualifying the opportunities that we all get by email or find with web-searches. Finding the most up front and the fewest hidden costs. I was very willing, even driven to invest time and mental effort but, let's face it, no one gets rich on Workmen's Compensation so cash expenditures needed to be kept at a minimum. What I found was that, just like buying stock you increase your probability of reward by diversifying and positioning yourself with a few different systems so that while one may go a bit slow from time to time the others are there to take the pinch out of those lean times. You'll find that most of the work at home systems pledge that you'll only need to spend a few hours each week to reap rewards. Truth is that if you want to get ahead you'll need to put in a few hours daily. Now, what to do with the other hours of the day? Personally, I'd decided at the outset that I would work at least as hard for myself as I did for my boss. What to do? Simple, Pick up another system and devote a few hours a day to that and add maybe another one to take up a few more hours. I mixed independent work with the kind of MLM that didn't have me hawking wares to unsuspecting friends and family. And I'm exploring MRM (more on that another time). The beauty of the MLM strategy is that it possesses the natural attractor of residual income since you receive a cut from every sale down through so many levels. As long as your downline keeps working then you're in a position to invest less time there while still being rewarded and take that time to put into another venture.

What I found is that while any of these may make you wealthy, not many of them do it like RIGHT NOW! I set my sights a little lower and determined to get a good wage for my effort since in my position I could often afford just so much money which limited the amount that I could receive in return. It does you no good at all to invest the rent in order to make several times as much when the landlord is at the door threatening eviction.

You need to take a good hard look at what you're buying. Determine what it'll cost at the very minimum. With what that'll buy can you now use your own effort to begin bringing in some income? Are you willing to invest the effort? If so, take that first step. If not look somewhere else. The perfect opportunity isn't likely to just fall into your lap. You'll have to shop to find the complete system that's in sync with your comfort level. Once you do though, it's really rewarding to reap the rewards of your efforts as opposed to a simple pay check representing your cut of your efforts. You're likely to find that you are in agreement that you have more time to devote to other pursuits and begin to develop the multiple streams that I suggested earlier.

Reasons

What's your reason for wanting to work for yourself? Think about it.

So many are jealous of their boss, the things he has and the apparent lack of work that he has to do during the working day. If you're of this mindset you're in for a surprise. The boss may not be liftin' that bale or totin' that barge but, he's traded those efforts for less visual things like phone calls, organizational details, listening to workers' and customers' complaints, etc. Basically he's become a fireman putting out the little fires as they pop up with policy decisions, capital investments, and headaches. Sure he takes grand vacations, lives in a fine home, and drives a top of the line car but, unless he inherited the money his sweat paid for those things.

This is not to say that there aren't unscrupulous individuals out there, and their numbers are growing, who own a few houses and several top of the line cars, and flaunt wads of cash while their workforce struggles by on the most minimal wages that can be paid. Frankly, this is the situation that drives our workforce to be as mobile as it has become. The days when you took a job and stayed with it until retirement, diligently working your way up within the hierarchy over time are gone. The vastly overwhelming trend these days is that you take several jobs over your working life working your way up by taking new jobs with several different companies. Of course the flip side of this is that employers are less inclined to pay the big wages and invest in the futures of employees who don't stay for long. And so, a cycle exists the less the employer invests the shorter the employee stays leading the employer to invest even less and the employee to be looking for greener pastures on their first day.

Under this scenario, many are driven to try their hand at running their own business by the sheer frustration of this cycle. Why work anywhere that has no interest in you the worker who makes possible, through effort, the wealth of the boss? After all it may have been his ideas and organization but he couldn't do it alone, he needed you. Unfortunately, many of these people will fail because they don't understand the boss's job since they've never been offered a peek behind that particular curtain. Many businesses fail because they're insufficiently capitalized in the beginning. Restaurants are particularly susceptible to this. Money is needed to get through the lean early days while your business builds up steam and begins to bring in customers as either repeat business or referrals. In the current climate many new businesses are repeats of other existing businesses. As such, a reason to come to you over your competition needs to be presented. Often, now, the sole reason may be that your name got listed before your competition or your ad was more eye-catching. Either of these will require investment. And now you're the consumer, who do you enlist to get your name out there? Is more expensive necessarily better? How will you know? Probably you'll have to go through some trial and error meaning that you'll be eating into your capital until you get it right. How to get it right?

Here we go again. In order to make any money you need to invest time, effort, and money. You'll need to make your choices based on what you can actually afford which is where home-based businesses come into the equation. Likely, the lack of physical overhead brings the amount of investment down to a more realistically affordable number for the average person looking to break out on their own. That having been said, the odds are good that you'll still need some money for marketing.

Marketing is probably your single most important expense. If you're unknown you'll remain unknown without marketing. You need to get your name out there where your potential customers can see it. You need to advertise. There are many free sites where you can post ads free of charge but not free of effort. You'll need to find these sites and then write and post your ad. There are tools that help with this process but, here again you'll need to buy them. The other aspect of this is that you'll need to be doing something for at least some part of every day. If you sit back and try to let it run itself, you'll rapidly find that your competitor has been working diligently on their campaign and suddenly instead of being on the first page of a search you've dropped down to the third or fourth page, you know, that part of a web-search that NO ONE EVER READS.

I don't mean to be discouraging, I do however, believe in honesty. Too many people buy into various programs, systems, or schemes that have the potential to work for them but then find out about how much it'll cost to get going and their initial layout to buy in becomes just so much lost money. I believe that a person can make good working for themselves at home otherwise I wouldn't have anything to do with listing these programs. I also believe that left in a sea of options many people will buy in and then leave their investment to gather dust. They've bought hope, not success. I'd rather that the casual tire-kickers hang on to their money and leave these opportunities to those who want them bad enough to succeed.

Buyer... BEWARE!

Just like you I receive a lot of emails with any number and manner of schemes to make money. Most of these have a certain amount of truth to them... depending on what you're willing to do to achieve the success they promise. And there lies the trap.

You may receive an offer of a free product to help you get ahead. Often the product itself is free but, in order to use the product will require membership or maintenance fees that may be required on a monthly, yearly or even both basis. The word "free" was not strictly dishonest in that you did receive the software, e book, etc. without charge. However, it was less than actually honest in that your gift is useless without the fees. You need to look very carefully at the ad that draws you in and be aware of all the fine print along the way as you happily click the links.

Too many of us are in real need of just some extra income let alone the massive cash streams that these "offers" often promise. Most are at a point in their lives where there may be willingness and enthusiasm but money to invest is in short or non-existent supply. My father's generation were born just before the Great Depression and their advice was always, "never gamble money you need to eat." Sound advice but somewhat less than inspiring when trying to get ahead. The advice holds true enough but, there are degrees of need based on what it is that your willing to do without in order to follow your dreams. Nowadays there's very little that a person can do to get ahead on the notion of "a fair day's work for a fair day's wage." The world has moved on and we've "progressed" from one income homes to often needing two and a half incomes just to tread water let alone swim to shore.

Under these circumstances, it's essential that some decisions be made with regard to what is a real need and what is simply a want. As a rule, the more you can give, the more you'll get which is why I ask, "if this 'system' is so good, why are the costs hidden behind 'free' offers?" If the system has real merit, why not just state what it's going to cost up front and then explain what the money buys?

None of the links here take you to anything that's "free." Costs vary, some are relatively inexpensive, others are a bit more costly. The simple truth of life is that you never get something for nothing. The people who devise these systems want to get paid for their efforts. Those who advertise them want their cut. It's your task to decide what you can spend and whether what you can afford is going to make you the kind of returns that you need.

This is a "free" site. Your use of the resources to shop is entirely free of charge. However, to become involved with any of the links will require investment. That is pretty much my disclosure statement. I make it because I believe that "fair trade" isn't just about lack of restriction. In order to be truly "fair", being up front about what's behind the curtain is necessary.

What this all boils down to is quite simple: read thoroughly and ponder completely. Buy what you can afford and maintain. Don't spend your money on hope, spend it on reality.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://4realworkathome.blogspot.com/2008/02/buyer-beware.html' title='Buyer... There is one thing however that I really feel you should carefully consider.

Steer away from opportunities that lead you into making pitches to family and friends. Why? These people have already "bought" you. Isn't that the first of the three parts in a sale? Yes it is, but...

It's precisely because they've "bought" you that I wouldn't pitch to them. It's a matter of time and context. The way they know you is not as a salesperson. Their very history with you can likely be a solid reason why they shy away from buying from you. It was all well and good selling to family and friends as a kid boosting the local team, band, or UNICEF. It's quite another to ask them to part with their hard earned for something that may require some effort on their part as well as an investment. Now, they feel ambushed and quite often, rightly so.

I don't need to mention names here but several companies over the years discouraged any mention of their names until well into a "sales meeting." This very practice guides you down the road of needing to go to friends and family to get any kind of start. And, because of this ambushing procedure, their names got out through word of mouth and regardless of product quality their reputations suffered and took the potential salesperson's along for the down-hill ride.

Your product may be fantastic and it may be something they really should have but you're better off if you position yourself as doing well and have them ask you first. In general, the company you represent should be a name that you can take pride in mentioning right off the bat. Concealing it should be like a big, bright red alarm. However, even if there's no divisiveness about how the sales are performed, family and friends feel a certain pressure that isn't good for you or your relationship. Furthermore, just as the axiom that familiarity breeds contempt, it is often hard for them to understand how you found this great opportunity before them. A far wiser head than mine once noted that it's impossible to be a prophet in your own home town. The same is true in sales. Again, better to do well amongst strangers and then help them along when they ask.

Three Sales In One

I was once told that inside every sale were actually three sales and that they happen in the same order every time. First they buy you, then they buy the company, and then they buy the product. So far its been my experience that there's truth in this model.

If you're a turn-off then no sale will be made. If you do well but your company has a really bad reputation then, again, no sale. If you do well, and the company has good selling points but the product's an obvious loser then...you get the idea. It's apparent here too, that at each level a hurdle has been leapt and the next stage's hurdle is a bit lower and therefore easier to overcome but, it still has needs proper attention.

As someone working for themselves it becomes your responsibility to make sure that all the pieces are in place. The "you" part of the equation is mostly about attitude and product knowledge. The "company" has to do with positioning yourself to represent a company who's reputation is respected. And the "product" is about asking yourself, "is this something I would want and can depend?"

Now, consider resales or customer referrals. The same process occurs but, in reverse order. Did the product live up to reasonable expectations? If so, you've leapt the highest hurdle. The company's reputation remains solid or is enhanced and the customer feels they know you and will put your face on their purchase. If not, the company's reputation suffers as does yours.

Choosing a company to align yourself is similar to the selling cycle. The company has to meet the same criterion for you as it would with your potential customer. The biggest thing you need to ask yourself is, are you willing to paste your face on a product they make? Are their practices the kind that you can realistically see yourself following? Is their product one that you can visualize others needing or wanting?

No matter where you go be sure it's a place that you feel at home. Without this your attitude will suffer and we can just look up at the top of this post to see how that'll work.

FISH!

There was mention in the last post of attitude. Many out there who've been through various management seminars or training schools will no doubt have seen a video entitled FISH. This video profiles a fish market in Seattle. Many will know of the place even without that video because the way the employees throw whole fish back and forth and loudly banter back and forth have been featured on TV and movies as well.

The point behind the whole presentation is that these people stopped concerning themselves with going to work and started to make work fun. Selling fish has become almost incidental. They're a fish market so their customers have come to buy fish anyway, now a new element has been introduced, fun. What it comes down to is that you don't have to "sell" someone who's already come to buy your product. What you need to do now is make that buying experience worth repeating. By deciding to "play" at work this market has made itself an icon in the area.

When you get a call from an ad you've placed, you already know that there's interest in what you're selling. It's up to you to make that experience worthwhile. You do this by answering questions and just plain talking. In other words, don't sell. Be yourself. When the guys at the fish market start their day, they do so with an attitude that it's going to be a great day. More often that not, they're right. They banter with each other, they banter with the customers, and generally set out to have a good time.

Making money doesn't have to hurt. It doesn't have to weigh you down. If you know your product, if you've placed the ads that have brought the customer to your door, and if you know how to just have a conversation, then you're a good portion of the way toward realizing your dreams.

You'll have many days when your conversations yield nothing. But was it really nothing? You met someone new, you spent a part of your work day just having a chat. These are positives and if you don't overlook them then you spend a lot less time thinking that you missed something. Your attitude will be better, it will show in your voice, it will make you more approachable, and your outcomes will become increasingly productive.

Attitude is all. Would you rather buy from someone who monotones through what they have to say, sticks strictly to pushing the product or from someone who seems happy to be there and treats you as if they're happy to see you?

To MLM or not to MLM?

That is the question.

Pardon my blatant rip-off but, the rip-off or rather, the building upon a tried system, is the point. It's absolutely true that you can make it on your own. In order to do so you'll have to find a product, learn how to write your ads, where and how to post them, invest in the tools that'll get your ads and sites posted in the most prominent positions. It's tough and somewhat expensive but, with creativity and drive you can do it.

Now let's look at the MLM side of the question. In this model you design nothing. The product is already packaged and the means to succeed have already been tested. The buy-in up front is often higher yet you may find upon true consideration that in the long run, what you spend could be less than what you'd spend in total to acquire the skills mentioned above. Another thing to bear in mind is that Donald Trump, when asked on a TV talk show what he'd do if he were to lose everything, replied, "I'd find a good MLM system." This was received by boo's and catcalls, to which he replied,"that's why I'm sitting here and you're sitting out there." If I haven't quoted exactly, my apologies to Mr. Trump, but the point is nevertheless, the same.

Am I advocating MLM over non MLM, not in the least. This is a page dedicated to helping people find a new path to their goals. The point is comfort zone. You the reader have to determine for yourself what it is that makes your heart sing. If you have the resources and the talents to strike out on your own then who knows? You could be the next guru at the top of the food chain in a system of your devising. But maybe you're not comfortable with that model. Then your choice is might just be to join in on a system already devised and working for others.

Your life is all up to you. Everything you do is a matter of choice. You can get up each morning and go to a job that most find disgusting and demeaning with a positive go-get-'em attitude that'll make your day a great one, or you can go to a job that others envy with a depressed attitude and have no satisfaction at all. So once again, the choice is yours. What opportunities can you really wrap your head around? Are you willing to do what it takes to succeed? All that's left is to go for it.

Discretion

One truth of choosing to work at home is that there are many who tout their "system" as being "guaranteed" or "sure fire". What you as a potential Home Business owner need to be aware of is that all of these have certain requirements on your time, effort, and or ability to invest. You therefore need to pay close attention to the details.

When you go to make a choice you need to be aware of what demands are being made of you and think about how willing you'll be six months or a year down the line to meet those demands.

This is a redundant theme here but one that cannot be stressed enough. When you go out and spend some of your hard earned cash you need to receive value in return. Everything listed in the product links can potentially make you money or it wouldn't be listed here. That's the upside. The downside is that you must adhere to the plan involved and stick to it.

We provide this site as a free asset to those looking to better their lives. Many different systems are represented because there is no option that is a perfect match for everyone. Therefore, you are encouraged to browse the links, read them carefully and make your selection after real consideration of their merits and your belief that you can really do what needs doing to achieve real success.

Best wishes in your search and for your future.

New!

Welcome! The biggest of these is desire. But once warm fuzzy feeling of having struck out on your own fades the one thing that remains is that to be successful you'll have to work.

Those who succeed are the ones who face that fact and hold tight to the fact that even though they're working hard it's for themselves and the rewards that they reap will belong to them instead of lining their boss's pocket. They also have something else; the support of their loved ones. Home based business people need that support and they need to set certain ground rules.

When you go to work at a "regular" job, you actually physically remove yourself from its distractions. When you work at home, the lines between being at work and being at home will become very blurry. Not just to those who live with you but to yourself as well. Overcoming this lack of focus is one part of working at home that is ongoing, and imperative.

The easiest way for the worker to get into focus is to perform the normal morning "getting ready" functions that they did when working for someone else. It doesn't matter that you're only going down the hall or to the corner, get out of bed with an "I'm off to work" attitude. Don't even look over to your work area until you've done whatever it is that you normally did before leaving the house. Separation is the key to focus.

For those who live with you, it needs to be explained that you're at work and that you need that time to be alone with your work. It can be hard on them. When you're in the house it's as if you have the day off in their eyes. While you can and should be a bit less formal than if you were at work, you can't be expected to just drop everything and go shopping, watch TV, etc. The best way to achieve this separation for their benefit is to block your functions into groups with some available downtime in between. It's easier on your loved ones and they're more likely to let you be at work when you don't just sit in a room for eight straight hours typing and talking on the phone. The money is very real, but how you make it is less visually apparent unless they're working at it too. The obvious draw back to staggering your work day is that you have to impose a strict self-discipline and make sure that you return to work for the next block of activity. It's all well and good that you can work the hours you want to work as long a you actually work them.

If you were to offer your services to a company as a satellite office they will generally require that you have a private room, separate phone line with the ability to shut off the features like call waiting, no pet distractions, etc. You get the idea. And, if these things are important to these established businesses, they're worthy of review for your own success. But, the single most important thing of all is support. If you can't get your friends and family to recognize that you're at work then you never will be and your dreams will end up in the dust.

So, before you make the decision to go ahead, talk it out. Get everyone on board and then move forward. It'll go smoother for you and everyone involved if the idea is planted ahead of time. The issue may still come up, but the fact that it was discussed before hand will make it a great deal less abrasive when you point out invasions on your work time.

Welcome!

Our purpose is provide a single site where you can link to various work-at-home opportunities.
